What Is It?

Solar-Powered Water Pumping for Farmers

A solar submersible pump system replaces diesel or grid-powered pumps with solar panels that directly power a submersible motor placed deep inside a borewell or open well. It lifts water to the surface for irrigation, drinking water supply, or livestock.

Under PM-KUSUM Component C, the government covers up to 90% of the cost — farmers pay only 10%, and in many states even that 10% comes as a soft loan from NABARD or state banks.

Working Principle

How a Solar Pump Works

Sunlight to water — in four simple steps

☀️
1

Solar Panels

Absorb sunlight and convert it to DC electricity. Mounted on a MS frame near the borewell.

2

VFD Controller

Variable Frequency Drive converts DC to AC and regulates pump speed based on sunlight intensity.

💧
3

Submersible Motor

AC power drives the motor inside the borewell, pulling groundwater up through rising pipes.

🌾
4

Field Irrigation

Water is delivered to drip/sprinkler lines or storage tanks for irrigation and drinking.

Why Solar Pump?

Farmer Benefits at a Glance

💰

Eliminate Diesel Cost

A 5HP diesel pump costs ₹50,000–70,000/year in fuel. Solar eliminates this completely from day one.

🌊

Reliable Water Supply

No DISCOM power cuts, no fuel shortages. Pump runs whenever there is sunlight — 8 to 10 hours daily.

🌱

Zero Carbon Emission

Completely clean energy. No smoke, no noise, no pollution — good for you and the environment.

🔧

Low Maintenance

No moving parts in solar panels. Motor service every 3–5 years only. Much simpler than diesel engines.

📈

Income from Surplus Power

Under PM-KUSUM, unused solar power can be sold back to DISCOM at ₹3.07/unit, earning extra income.

🏦

25-Year Return

After paying 10% cost (sometimes even that is a soft loan), you get free water and/or income for 25 years.

FAQ

Common Questions

Can I sell extra power to the grid with PM-KUSUM?
Yes — under PM-KUSUM Component A (feederisation), surplus power from farm-based solar plants can be sold to DISCOMs at a pre-agreed tariff (usually ₹2.50–₹3.50/unit). Individual stand-alone pumps (Component C) do not have net-metering, but you can apply under Component A separately for land-based plants.
What if my borewell runs dry?
The VFD pump controller includes a dry-run protection feature. It detects the absence of water and automatically shuts off the motor within seconds, preventing motor burn-out. The system restarts automatically once water level recovers.
Does the pump work on cloudy days?
Yes, but at reduced capacity. Modern VFD controllers can run the pump on as little as 30% of rated solar power. Completely overcast days may reduce flow to 10–20% of peak output. A water storage tank (1,000–10,000 litre) is recommended as a buffer.
How long does installation take?
A complete solar pump installation takes 2–4 days after site survey: panel mounting on day 1–2, pump lowering and pipe fitting on day 2–3, electrical connection and testing on day 3–4. PM-KUSUM applications take 4–8 weeks for approval before installation.
Is any grid connection required?
No. Solar submersible pumps (Component C) are completely stand-alone. They do not need any grid connection, meter, or permission from DISCOM. This makes them ideal for remote fields with no electricity supply.
What warranty do I get?
Solar panels come with a 10-year product warranty and 25-year performance warranty. The submersible motor carries a 1–2 year warranty from the OEM. VFD controllers are warranted for 1 year. Wemega provides 1 year free AMC on the full system.
